2003-2004 Mini-Grants Awarded

At its June 18, 2003, board meeting, The IAMLE board of directors awarded four mini-grant proposals totaling $2,998 for the 2003-04 school year. Seven proposals were submitted totaling $7,074. Congratulations to those who submitted successful proposals. Schools receiving these awards and a brief description of the proposals follow:

Recipients of Awards and Description of project

Parkview Middle School, Ankeny - Personal Digital Assistants
Submitted by Julie Townsend, the PDA’s will be used in a project named Exploring Issues in Water Quality. The students will use the PDAs and sensors to investigate water quality and evaluate the data. Students will create Excel displays and design PowerPoint presentations.

Wood Intermediate, Davenport - Kurzweil 300 Assistive Program 
Submitted by Pamela Bartel & June Gotaas White, the Kurzweil 300 Assistive Program would be purchased to improve the reading skills of special education and at-risk students. The program would also be used to help below-average readers access classroom texts.

Sergeant Bluff-Luton Middle School - Happiness is…a Comfortable Habitat
Submitted by Judy Foy, Happiness is…a Comfortable Habitat is an Inquiry Based Learning Unit that will include a computer simulation called Zoo Tycoon. A Web Quest activity will also be created to go with the unit for the students to access from school, home or the public library.

Maquoketa Middle School, Maquoketa - Multimedia presentations 
Submitted by Jane Schmidt, a digital movie camera will be purchased to create multimedia projects with all the sixth grade students. Some of the projects that could include the use of the digital camera are biographies of senior citizens; puppet plays based on folktales, presentations of book talks, and others.

IAMLE is pleased to offer the mini-grant program to educators in Iowa’s schools who serve the young adolescent student. Look for the grant winners presenting at a conference near you. IAMLE had many worthwhile mini-grants applied for the 2003-2004 school year.
