Students Taking
Charge to Support Healthier School Environments
The
Goal: To engage Iowa
students and student organizations to support their school’s Local Wellness
Policies by fostering healthier school and community environments.
The
Student Leadership Summit was held at Iowa State University November 14,
2006, with about 40 students and 35 adults attending. Partners attending and providing informational displays to
the students included: the Iowa Beef Industry Council; Iowa Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation
and Dance; Iowa Games/Go the Distance; Midwest Dairy Council; Iowa Medical
Society Alliance; Iowa Public Television; School Nutrition Association; Iowa
Department of Public Health/Pick A Better Snack message; ISU Extension; Iowa
Partners: Action for Healthy Kids; and Iowa Department of Education/Team
Nutrition and Local Wellness Policy information. The students that attended the
Student Wellness Summit acquired a variety of resources, heard from Dr. Stephen
Sroka, saw examples of activities they could use upon returning home, and helped
plan the ICN that was offered on January 31st, 2007.
As
concern over overweight grow and schools districts are charged with implementing
local school wellness policies, Iowa Partner’s: Action for Healthy Kids, ISU
Extension and IPTV continue to partner to provide students with the resources
and information that can help their schools.
On January 31, 2007, the Iowa Partners for Healthy Kids, including ISU
Extension, Iowa Department of Education’s Team Nutrition, and Iowa Public
Television also offered a informational ICN session for middle and high
school age students called “Students Taking Charge to Support Healthier
School Environments”. This session was designed to assist them in becoming involved
in creating healthier school environments and support their Local Wellness
Policy. There were 275 staff and
students registered for the ICN session. The
ICN on January 31st shared the resources and ideas that were learned
at the summit. The ICN promoted
working on a local action plan for students’ own school.
This two-hour session provided time for the students to learn about the
problem, address the concern for barriers preventing local action, hear about
resources that are available to all Iowa schools, and plan how they can become
involved and motivate others in promoting healthier behaviors locally.
