The Iowa Association for Middle Level Education |
Jerry Zavitz and Marilyn Phelan
At the June business meeting of the IAMLE Board of Directors, TWO individuals were named Iowa Middle Level Educator of the Year. Jerry Zavitz and Marilyn Phelan will share this year's award, in honor of long-time middle level advocate and educator R. Paul Brim.
Jerry Zavitz has been a social studies teacher at Wood Intermediate School in Davenport since 1974, in addition to teaching assignments at Davenport Central High School and middle schools in Illinois. Jerry is a committed educator and community volunteer. In the words of colleague Sherry Scott, "Jerry has the most positive attitude toward middle school of anyone that I have know. His philosophy is that students can and will learn given adequate opportunities, time, and have teachers who care about them...he does it all!"
Marilyn Phelan, a health educator at Bettendorf MS has practiced her craft in the Quad Cities area since 1975. Her resume is filled with awards, recognition, and a wide variety of professional activities. Michelle Brunty, a counselor at Bettendorf Middle School, has this to say about Marilyn: "Is Marilyn an exemplary role model to other middle level educators? Absolutely! Has Marilyn’s life positively affected the lives of hundreds and hundreds of sixth, seventh, and eighth graders? A very emphatic "YES"! In the words of Ghandi, one can truly say that Marilyn’s life is her message."
Awards will be presented at the Midwest Regional Middle Level Conference in Omaha in October.
